Conservatorship taken from Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband

Zsa Zsa Gabor, who is now 98 years old, had been cared for in part through the temporary conservatorship that her husband had over her. Her husband is Frederic Prinz von Anhalt. However, this position was recently stripped away by a judge. The judge claimed the man no longer needed this power because the woman could use an advanced health care directive instead.

The change happened in the Los Angeles Superior Court. The man had previously been in charge of the elderly woman's personal care, and he will no longer have those duties.

One thing that could shed some light on the situation is that the judge also determined that a general conservatorship had to be used regarding the woman's estate. Most often, these directives are used if an adult is deemed not to be mentally competent at handling the estate on his or her own.

Gabor's health issues started more than a decade ago, in 2002. She was in a car accident, and her injuries resulted in partial paralysis.

One of her children has been working now for some time to take the power away from her husband and instead get the conservatorship for herself. The reasoning for this is that Gabor's daughter saw that her mother was missing mortgage payments and that her husband had used her property to take out a loan for himself that was said to be six figures.

When doing estate planning, it's quite important to note who will have power over health care, financial matters and more. These powers can legally be transferred in a few ways, including through health care directives and conservatorships.
